Chinese New Year in Sydney

Chinese New Year in Sydney 2017

27 January 2017 – 12 February 2017

Celebrate the start of the Chinese New Year in Sydney with the year of the Rooster amongst the giant Lunar Lanterns which will light up the city. Festivities will centre around the Lunar Lanterns Hub in Martin Place and Chinatown on the southside of the CBD. With upwards of one million people expected to enjoy over 80 activities in the city across the Chinese New Year period, this is one of the largest celebrations outside of China.

There is something for everyone to enjoy, we are particularly looking forward to:

  1. Lunar Markets, Pyrmont Bay Park
Enjoy the flavours of Chinese New Year at these evening food markets with live entertainment. Held from 27 January to 5 February and open late into the balmy summer evenings.
  2. Chinatown Lion Dances
Traditional lion dances will be held most evenings in Chinatown and will feature a riot of colour and drum beats.
  3. Monkey Tales in the Garden, Pier Street
  4. Dragon Boat Races, held on the 11th & 12th of February at Cockle Bay Wharf in Darling Harbour.

Great for the whole family, the award winning Monkey Baa Theatre Company weaves a dazzling tale of a monkey and a flamboyant rooster in the Chinese Garden of Friendship.
