Experience the best of Sydney this winter

Posted on June 11, 2015 by Arts and Culture in Sydney, Sports, Sydney Events, Sydney-Attractions

With plenty of mild sunny days and crisp clear nights, winter is the perfect time to experience a different side to Sydney. The city comes alive from June through to August with wonderful winter festivals, art exhibitions and international sporting tournaments. It’s a playground for couples, families and groups of friends alike; no matter who you’re travelling with we promise you’ll find something to keep you all entertained.

Play in the Winter Garden
Just a few minutes down the road from the hotel is where you’ll find the magical Winter Garden, right next to St Mary’s Cathedral in the Domain. You can skate around Australia’s largest open-air ice rink, slip down the giant inflatable slide or stay warm by the fireplace in the lounge sipping on a hot chocolate. It’s a perfect place to take a loved one for a romantic night out, spend time with a group of friends, or treat the family to a fun day out. The Winter Garden runs from 19 June – 19 July.

Australia’s Favourite Art Exhibition
One of the most important annual prizes in the Australian art world, the Archibald Prize, is exhibited at the Art Gallery of NSW from 18 July – 27 September. Awarded to the best portrait painting in the collection, the Archibald Prize displays well-known politicians, local celebrities, sporting heroes, artists and more. Also displaying during this same period is the Wynne Prize for the best landscape painting depicting Australian scenery and the Sulman Prize for the best subject painting. Getting to the art gallery from the hotel is quite easy, Martin Place is one stop away on the underground train and from here it’s a 10 minute walk.

Watch the Wallabies take on the All Blacks

Cheer on the Wallabies at ANZ Stadium as they give it their all against the New Zealand All Blacks in an attempt to break the 13 year drought for the Bledisloe Cup. It’s one of the fiercest sporting rivalries in the world and the Wallabies will need the home crowd advantage in the first game on Saturday 8th August 2015. After that it’s off to Eden Park across the Tasman for round two. Travelling to the game from the hotel is quick and easy via public transport.

Cheer on the Aussies in the Netball World Cup
From Friday 7 – Sunday 16 August 2015, 192 of the world’s best netballers from 16 countries all over the world, will descend onto our shores to compete in the Netball World Cup. With 64 matches taking place over the course of 10 days, this year’s tournament promises to be the best yet. Head down to Sydney Olympic Park and cheer on The Australian Diamonds as they take on arch rivals, the New Zealand Silver Ferns, in the pool stage. The best way to travel to matches is via public transport, click here to plan your journey.

See Matilda the Musical
Many of us have fond memories of reading this Roald Dahl classic, or watching the film adaptation. Now you can relive that experience as the musical version is coming to Sydney’s Lyric Theatre from 28 July – 08 November, 2015. The Royal Shakespeare Company’s multi-award winning musical is one to add to the list to see when you come to town. Make sure you head over to the website and book well in advance; this one is bound to sell-out.

Explore Potts Point

Take advantage of our amazing location, right in the heart of the cosmopolitan neighbourhood of Potts Point. The picturesque streets next to the hotel are lined with quirky cafes, award-winning restaurants and lively bars. Only moments down the road you’ll find the internationally acclaimed restaurant, Billy Kwong’s, if you’re in the mood for some traditional Asian cuisine. For those looking for a sweet treat to finish off the day, look no further than Gelato Messina or Bourke Street Bakery, both just a five minute stroll from the hotel. If you don’t feel like venturing out for the evening, why not try Sirocco Restaurant and Bar which offers everything from a pre-dinner drink with bar bites to an indulgent three-course meal.
