Taronga Zoo

Spring is the perfect time to visit Sydney. The weather is getting warmer, the sun is shining and there are plenty of events happening across the city to keep the whole family entertained. With school holidays right around the corner, we’ve compiled a list of the top activities and places to visit with the kids so you can make the most of your family’s time together:

Sydney Harbour

  • Taronga Zoo

What’s not to love about Taronga Zoo? Whether you’re a four year old or a forty year old, we guarantee you’ll enjoy this amazing day out. Home to over 4000 animals from 350 different species, there is plenty for the kids to see and learn with interactive talks, shows and animal encounters happening across the zoo each day. Make sure you keep the camera handy as there will be plenty of photo opportunities of the little ones (and we don’t just mean the animals).  You can make an entire day of it with a scenic ferry ride across from Circular Quay and a picnic lunch overlooking Sydney harbour.

  • Picnic at the Royal Botanic Gardens

Something as simple, easy and hassle-free as a picnic in the gardens is the perfect way to enjoy some quality time together as a family. Just one stop on the underground train and a short walk away is where you’ll find the Royal Botanic Gardens. All you need to do is find the perfect spot under the shade of the trees with a view of the harbour to spend the day. The kids can run around on the grass, whilst you and the rest of the family tuck into a delicious picnic lunch. If you’ve got a little horticulturist on your hands then there are guided walks and maps all around the park loaded with lots of interesting information.

  • Luna Park Sydney

Luna Park is the ultimate playground for both adults and children alike and is another great option for a family day out. It’s where everyone goes for a bit of fun and amusement. The little ones can pilot their own Space Shuttle, or wave to Mum and Dad as they go round on the Whirly Wheel. For the big kids and big kids at heart (we’re looking at you Mum and Dad) take a spin on the Wild Mouse Rollercoaster or hold onto the edge of your seat on the Hair Raiser. Luna Park is easily accessible by public transport with the underground train station located adjacent to the hotel.

  • A trip to Bondi Beach

Just two stops and a scenic bus trip away is where you’ll find one of Australia’s most famous beaches, Bondi. The kids can learn how to surf, go for a boogie board, swim in between the red and yellow flags or run amuck in the sand. The legendary Bondi to Coogee coastal walk is a great option for those with active kids as they can explore the rock pools and beaches along the 6km trail. Make sure you slip, slop and slap if you’re planning to be in the sun for the day.

Festival of the Winds, an exciting show of colourful kite creations, takes place on Sunday 13th September. If you are in Sydney during this time it is something you and the family must go and see.

  • Sydney Explorer Bus

The Sydney Explorer bus is an ideal option for those visiting Sydney for the first time or for those that are looking to cross multiple items off the sight-seeing list. There are a whopping 34 stops on the bus route covering off areas including Potts Point, Darling Harbour, Bondi, the Sydney Opera House, The Rocks, Circular Quay and more. If this sounds like something you’d like to do then make sure you check out our Family Getaway package which includes tickets for the Sydney Explorer Bus.

A Day at Taronga Zoo

Taronga Zoo Giraffe

A day out at Taronga Zoo is the perfect way to keep the entire family entertained on your next trip to Sydney.

Taronga Zoo is famous around the world for its large animal enclosures – visitors can see over 4,000 animals from over 350 species – thrilling live shows, informative keeper talks, animal interactions and its range of special events and concerts. Nestled high on the banks of Mosman and overlooking spectacular Sydney Harbour, the animals won’t be the only thing to keep you reaching for your camera.

Recommendations from the Potts Point team – What you must see at Taronga Zoo:

  • The Seal Show: Perhaps the most popular attraction at Taronga Zoo, the daily Seal Show gives visitors a chance to see Californian Sea-lions, Australian Sea-lions and a New Zealand Fur-seal show off their natural abilities, including catching fish, climbing and diving. A definite crowd pleaser for young and old alike, this amazing show is a must-see for all Taronga visitors.
  • QBE Free Flight Bird Show: Set against the beautiful backdrop of Sydney Harbour, the Free Flight Bird Show displays the unique talents of many bird species (including native galahs and cockatoos), all in one magical showcase. The star of the show is a beautiful Andean Condor whose three-meter wingspan is a sight to behold.
  • Animal Encounters: Available daily at a small fee, visitors to Taronga can get up close and personal with a koala, feed a giraffe, make friends with a reptile, spend some time with the penguins or have a close encounter with an owl. Bookings are essential and places are limited. Click here to find out more.
  • Twlight at Taronga: The fun doesn’t stop when the sun goes down. The Twilight at Taronga concert series (taking place each Friday and Saturday night from late January to March) celebrates summer in Sydney with a range of acclaimed performances from Australian and International bands and singers. Pack a picnic, enjoy a drink from the onsite bar and settle in for an evening of great music under the stars. Click here for the current Twilight at Taronga performance schedule.
  • Elephants, Bears and Lions, oh my!: With over 350 species of animals living at Taronga Zoo, there’s no shortage of opportunities to get up close to some of the most majestic, elusive and rare species living today. You’ll need a full day to properly see all the animals at Taronga Zoo, so be sure to download a zoo map and leave yourself enough time to comfortably navigate each animal habitat.

Getting there

The easiest way to get to Taronga Zoo is by public transport. The trip is just 12 minutes by ferry from Circular Quay or via a short bus trip from the city. Plus you’ll have access to discounts with combined public transport and zoo entry tickets.

Allow a full day for your trip including transportation. The best way to get to Taronga Zoo from Holiday Inn Potts Point is to catch the train to Martin Place and walk 10 minutes to Circular Quay to catch the ferry.

For an absolutely unbeatable view of Sydney Harbour, the Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House, a ride on the zoo’s Sky Safari is a must. You’ll hop onto a suspended gondola and be craned up the hills of Mosman to enjoy a 360 degree view of the harbour, Mosman and the entire zoo grounds. If heights are not your favourite thing, you can hop aboard a dedicated zoo bus to be transported up to the main zoo entrance, or enjoy the leisurely walk (and lots of photo opportunities) up the hillside. Both the Sky Safari and the Zoo bus are accessible from the Taronga Zoo ferry wharf.
